December’s Birthstone – Turquoise

I remember going swimming in the local swimming pool as a child. I remember holding my breath under the water and cautiously opening my eyes in the chlorinated water to take in the somewhat blurry image of my surroundings. Aside from the sight of an odd pair of pale legs connecting to the surface of the water, I saw nothing but blue.

Looking out toward the deeper end of the pool I saw a richer, darker shade of blue – the mysterious unknown from which I could imagine the shadow of a great white shark suddenly swimming towards me. I found much more comfort in the turquoise shade of blue that enveloped my own nice shallow end of the pool. I knew that here I was safe, that here I was in control and that I was protected.

It came as no surprise to me then in my encounter with gemstones that the bright blue turquoise gemstone has been considered by many ancient civilizations to be a divine stone of luck, strength and protection. Aside from giving the wearer a uniquely bright and positive splash of colour to their wardrobe, this gorgeous December birthstone is also said to be a great stone for travellers as it help to protect the wearer on their journeys and keep them safe from evils and misfortunes along the way such as being pickpocketed or physical accidents.

So whether you’re planning a big trip away, want to avoid any bad juju or just want to add some eye catching colour to your outfit, turquoise could be the stone for you!

July’s Birthstones – Carnelian and Ruby

Are you fiery and passionate, a born leader with an unstoppable zest for life? Then odds are that you are a fearless July baby and your birthstones are the breathtakingly vibrant carnelian and ruby. Burning bright as the colours from a summer bonfire, these orange and red gemstones both reflect the personality of the wearer and empower them by enhancing their strongest character traits.

Known as a stone of motivation and endurance, leadership and courage, Carnelian has been worn by great warriors and leaders throughout history as it emboldens the wearer to push their limits and strive in the face of adversity. In ancient Egypt, Carnelian was called “the setting sun.” In its orange hues, they identified it with the receptive or passive female energies, and associated it with the fertile menstrual blood of the mother goddess, Isis. In its red, red-orange to reddish brown shades, they considered it the active male energy stone, recognized by its glowing vibrant color.  Carnelian is traditionally worn to enhance passion, love, and desire.

Ruby on the other hand, the more well-known of these two striking July birthstones is a deep red or bold magenta toned gemstone that for centuries has been a prized jewel all over the world, particularly in Asia. According to Hindu legend, the glowing fire within rubies burned so hot that they allegedly boiled water and shone so bright that even the thickest clothing and could not hide its gleaming glory. Similar to carnelian, the ruby is a stone of passion and desire and are considered in certain cultures to be the perfect gemstone for weddings as it promotes faithful passionate commitment and closeness between a couple.

So whether you need a burst of courage heading into a job interview or the heat of romantic passion in your life, these blazing July gemstones could be just what you’re looking for. Here are some our favourite Juvi pieces featuring these brilliant birthstones:

Slow Craftsmanship – Timeless Jewellery

At Juvi, our passion lies in the craft of our pieces. After all, it’s what gets us up in the morning and ignites our creativity.  Working with raw materials, beautiful twinkling gemstones and good old pencil and paper, as we sketch, create and perfect our pieces from simple ideas to beautiful jewellery.

We have the utmost integrity in what we do.  And it all starts with our endless desire to travel.  Every one of our collections has been inspired by a corner of the world that holds a special place in our heart.  From the gentle lapping waves of the Philippine shorelines, to the magical cocoa plantations of Mexico, the awe-inspiring twinkling windows of the tallest skyscrapers of Manhattan – right down to the majestic open skies over Ballinskelligs, right here on the Emerald Isle.

Travel is as important to us at Juvi as the air we breathe.  It sustains us, it helps us grow, feel inspired and create.  Every trip we take, be it as a family break with our children, to spend some downtime together, or as an excursion to explore and seek out the most beautiful, ethically sourced gemstones, we absorb that little touch of magic of the unknown, the excitement of what’s waiting around the next corner, and always return with pockets full of gemstones and sketchbooks full of designs and ideas for new collections.

Quality is so important to us, especially when it comes to selecting the gemstones for our pieces.  Believe us when we say we pore over the stones that will become part of our collections.  We don’t believe in fast fashion, so our process is slow.  We take our time with the local experts, we drink tea, chat, laugh and scrutinize before we make our selections.

We focus on all factors, from sustainability, the ethical implications, the people on the ground who collect these stones and the expertise used, following years of tradition to hand cut and shape these pieces.  If it has taken the Earth thousands of years to cultivate these stones, we want to respect the process and allow the time to choose them – the earth doesn’t rush things, so either do we.

Metals

Like you, the footprint we cast means a lot to us, so we thread gently, using recyclable materials like gold and silver.  All sterling silver and gold that we use is recycled from jewellery, giftware and electronic industries.

In the plating process we use the finest German plating machinery and solutions at our dedicated plating room at our workshop, allowing us to be in full control of the quality of our plating.  We plate our Sterling Silver jewellery to 3 microns.

Stones

For centuries, the Pink City in India has been known as the epicentre for hand cut gemstones.  Temples throughout India are adorned in beautiful stones, catching every sun ray and adding a majestic feeling to these spectacular structures.  This has led to exceptional expertise over time and the gemstone workers in this part of India are known as the world leaders in their craft. This is why we always look to Jaipur when sourcing our hand cut gemstones.

The difference between machine cut and hand cut gemstones is evident in the finished product.  Machine cut stones have a very manufactured “perfect” finish, whereas the very nature of hand cut gemstones allows for a more organic, unique look – you know that there isn’t an exact stone like it in the world – which we believe makes the stones we use extra special.

Diamonds

At Juvi, we are extremely conscious of the quality of our diamonds and their origination.  We only use the next generation answer to responsible diamonds – CUD or lab grown diamonds.  The lab process imitates the natural process, using high temperatures required to create earth-kind and notably conflict-free diamonds that do not support warlords, invading armies or smugglers, which has become all too common in the International diamond trade.

Like natural diamonds CUD diamond are graded using the same 5 C’s:

1: Cut – referring to a diamonds symmetry and cut

2: Colour – diamonds are graded by the absence of colour

3: Carat – the size and weight of a diamond

4: Clarity – noting the diamond’s unique imperfections

5: Conflict Free Origin – recognizing the above-ground diamond source

The ideal diamond would have a beautiful cut with brilliant sparkle and no imperfections like speckles of grey, brown or any other colours and, of course be conflict free.

Pearls                                                                              At Juvi, we use cultured freshwater pearls that are farmed and created using freshwater mussels.  These pearls are produced in Japan, USA and mostly, China.  Pearls, like diamonds are graded to a series of A Values based on luster (the whiter the better), shape (the rounder the better) and with no inclusions on the surface.

The perfect pearl is perfectly round, gleaming white and with no inclusions.

When you wear your Juvi jewellery we want you to feel gorgeous, but also know that your piece has been made with loving care and expertise.  Take your time choosing the perfect piece – enjoy it forever.

Ah at last, spring is finally beginning to appear; the sun peeps bashfully through the clouds, not so much that you could start working on your tan but just enough to catch the sparkle on that beautiful clear quartz Juvi ring of yours.

February’s Birthstone – Amethyst

Billy Ocean once sang ‘Tell me what is the colour of love”. No doubt if he had asked St. Valentine of Terni – after whom Valentine’s Day was named to tell him what the colour of love was, his answer would have been purple. Purple as the shades of amethyst that range from a pale red-violet to a deep violet. Indeed the saint to whom many is associated with the springtime rituals of courtly love had an affinity for amethyst, the birthstone for the month of February in which Valentine’s Day is firmly planted.  St. Valentine was historically reported to have always worn a striking amethyst gemstone ring engraved with the image of cupid. Prior to being associated with St Valentines however, there is a much older, much more mythological tale surrounding this enchanting gemstone.

Bacchus-2According to ancient Greek legend, Dionysus – the greek god of intoxication, ritual madness and wine – was in a very bad mood one day, having just been insulted by a mortal. In his fit of drunken rage, Dionysus declared his wrath on whoever the next mortal to cross his path would be. As unfortunate chance would have it, the next mortal to cross Dionysus’ path was in fact was an innocent and beautiful young maiden named Amethystos who was on her way to pay tribute at the temple of Artemis.

Greek_-_Standing_Maiden_with_Kerchief_-_Walters_48296

True to his word and blinded by anger, Dionysus set his wrath upon the poor girl by unleashing his two guardian tigers to attack her. The goddess Artemis seeing this, launched into swift action to protect the girl from the horrific death of being mauled to pieces by the tigers claws and turned the girl into a statue of pure crystalline quartz. While Artemis’ quick intervention spared the girl from her bloody fate, the girl was now unfortunately doomed to be a statue for the rest of her days. Emerging suddenly from his drunken fury and seeing the consequences of his brash actions, Dionysus felt immediate remorse. Grief overcame him and tears of wine streamed from his eyes. As he wept for the girl, his tears fell upon the girls crystalline figure and stained it purple. And so it came to pass that this purple crystal was called Amethyst in tribute to the young maiden Amethystos and her story.

Now knowing the legendary tale behind this exquisite gemstone, perhaps it makes a little more sense then that one of the key abilities of Amethyst is said to be to help the wearer ward off drunkenness. A little way perhaps that Amethystos helps to protect others from the alcohol triggered fate she herself had befallen. Aside from maintaining sobriety, Amethyst is also a stone very closely linked to the divine realm and thus it often is able to help the wearer achieve an enhanced meditative state and peace of mind.

So whether you’re recovering from a mad night out, been invited out with your boss for drinks or simply want to feel a little more connected to the energies around you, it could be useful to have a little Amethyst on hand.

January’s Birthstone – Garnet

A new year is a time for new beginnings, the opening of a brand new chapter in the story. It seems then oh so fitting that our birthstone for the month of January is the intensely blood red gemstone, garnet. Said to represent the primordial fire from which the creation of the universe was born out of chaos, we could not think of a more positive stone to kickstart the new year with.

The sultry shade of red found in this beautiful gemstone always reminds me of the colour of lipstick worn by the femme fatales in noir detective films and for good reason as garnet is said to be stone of great energy, intimacy, love and passion. So if you’re looking for love in the new year, be sure to slip on that garnet ring on your nights out to give you that extra boost of romantic confidence!

The confidence and passion boosting properties of Garnet however are not only limited to the realm of romance, but is great for pushing you forward and giving you that extra drive in your work life. If you’ve got big goals set for your career in the coming year, Garnet is definitely the stone to get you up and going on them! We’ll certainly be wearing our fair share of garnet this month as we start moving on our big 2019 plans and we look forward to having you join us every step of the way. Happy New Year!

June’s Birthstones – Moonstone and Pearl

The longer days and bright colours of summer in June really are breath-taking and give you a definite pep in your step when you leave the house in the morning, but what I always love in June are those lovely mild, romantic summer nights. As though in ode to these stunning clear June evenings, the two birthstones for this dreamy moonlit month are the opalescent pearl and moonstone.

Both pearls and moonstones have a gorgeous feminine softness to them and have an association with love, purity and the moon. According to Hindu mythology for instance, pearls were said to be teardrops of the moon that fell into the sea, and were picked by Krishna for his daughter on her wedding day. Meanwhile, moonstone is said to carry the the energy of the new moon at the height of its power, stimulating psychic perception, vision and dream work. Within Chinese culture, moonstone is also believed to be the perfect expression of the feminine yin energy, granting the wearer of moonstone calm, peace and balance in their lives.

Being so romantic and magical in their own ways, moonstone and pearls definitely bring out the hopeless romantic and midnight dreamer in us and we love it!
