December’s Birthstone – Turquoise

I remember going swimming in the local swimming pool as a child. I remember holding my breath under the water and cautiously opening my eyes in the chlorinated water to take in the somewhat blurry image of my surroundings. Aside from the sight of an odd pair of pale legs connecting to the surface of the water, I saw nothing but blue.

Looking out toward the deeper end of the pool I saw a richer, darker shade of blue – the mysterious unknown from which I could imagine the shadow of a great white shark suddenly swimming towards me. I found much more comfort in the turquoise shade of blue that enveloped my own nice shallow end of the pool. I knew that here I was safe, that here I was in control and that I was protected.

It came as no surprise to me then in my encounter with gemstones that the bright blue turquoise gemstone has been considered by many ancient civilizations to be a divine stone of luck, strength and protection. Aside from giving the wearer a uniquely bright and positive splash of colour to their wardrobe, this gorgeous December birthstone is also said to be a great stone for travellers as it help to protect the wearer on their journeys and keep them safe from evils and misfortunes along the way such as being pickpocketed or physical accidents.

So whether you’re planning a big trip away, want to avoid any bad juju or just want to add some eye catching colour to your outfit, turquoise could be the stone for you!

October’s Birthstone – Pink Tourmaline

Are you a mother, a carer, a romantic or simply someone with a passion for pink and a soft spot for everything sparkly? If you’re any of these things, then this month’s featured gemstone is probably the perfect stone for you. Being a primary stone of the heart chakra, pink tourmaline is a gemstone that brings out a person’s nurturing, loving and compassionate nature, which makes it a popular stone amongst healers and social workers.

Also known as ‘Rubellite’ which is the Latin word for red, pink tourmaline ranges in colour from pale pinks to deep magentas. Because of this, deeper shades of pink tourmaline have often been mistaken throughout history to be rubies. A number of the rich red-ish gemstones of the Russian crown jewels for example, which for centuries had been thought to be rubies are now in fact believed to be tourmalines. Although frequently mistook for the more famous Ruby, the pink tourmaline gemstone is in no way less valuable than it’s crimson counterpart as in fact, pink tourmalines are even rarer than rubies!

Merely looking at the warm, pleasant hue of it stunning October birthstone it’s evident why pink tourmaline is believed to exude a comforting and soothing energy. Said to help relieve stress, provide emotional support to those in trouble, remedy motion-sickness and depression as well as aid in reconciliation and enhance feelings of love in relationships. From a fashion perspective, the bright, vibrant colour of pink tourmaline is also a wonderful, playful way of adding a pop of colour and personality to your wardrobe.

September’s Birthstone – Lapis Lazuli

Entering September, we are now 3 quarters of the way into the year with only a few months left to wrap up everything left to do on our 2018 goals list. September is the perfect time to pause for a bit of self reflection and honest evaluation of everything you’ve done so far this year, and what you have left to do. What other gemstone other than the richly coloured lapis lazuli then could be more appropriate for this mindful time of year.

With its deep blue hue accented by gold or sometimes white flecks, the Lapis Lazuli stone is one that symbolises honor, wisdom and truth. A historically prized gemstone in Egypt- a country which is home to some of the largest and oldest of Lapis Lazuli mining sites – Lapis Lazuli was often closely associated with royalty and a supernatural connection with the Gods. In fact, many ancient Egyptian Kings, Queens and High Priests have been found to be buried in tombs set with Lapis Lazuli or with ornaments made from the gemstone.

Wearing Lapis Lazuli is said to help enhance good and balanced decision-making skills, encourage honesty of spirit and promote deep and connected communication in relationships.

Being a stone of wisdom, Lapis Lazuli is also said to boost intellectual ability, learning and memory, thus making it an ideal stone to wear if studying for an important exam or learning a new skill.

August Birthstone – Find your power in Peridot

This month we are celebrating the beautiful olive green August birthstone – Peridot.  This stunning stone is redolent of this time of year, as although we are still enjoying the Summer, the seasons are letting us know that Autumn is on the way.  And just like the leaves changing, the green of the Peridot features a glimmer of gold – a sign of what’s to come.

Its striking colour has also earned it the moniker “the evening emerald”.

Peridot is one of two gemstones formed in molten rock (its counterpart is the Diamond), and is created by the immense surge of power during earthquakes or volcanoes. However, the basic form of Peridot, known as Olivine was found in the samples returned by the Stardust Space Probe in 2006 and traces have even been found on the Moon.  This stone is simply out of this world.

Peridot comes with its own set of powerful characteristics – with strength at its core.  It’s believed that the wearer will benefit from increased power and influence, rejuvenating personal awareness and wellbeing. And when set in gold, it gives the added benefit of protection from nightmares.

For a personal gift for the August baby in your life, check out our Initials Collection – team up initials with a beautiful Peridot drop stone, matching rings also available in gold and silver.

July’s Birthstones – Carnelian and Ruby

Are you fiery and passionate, a born leader with an unstoppable zest for life? Then odds are that you are a fearless July baby and your birthstones are the breathtakingly vibrant carnelian and ruby. Burning bright as the colours from a summer bonfire, these orange and red gemstones both reflect the personality of the wearer and empower them by enhancing their strongest character traits.

Known as a stone of motivation and endurance, leadership and courage, Carnelian has been worn by great warriors and leaders throughout history as it emboldens the wearer to push their limits and strive in the face of adversity. In ancient Egypt, Carnelian was called “the setting sun.” In its orange hues, they identified it with the receptive or passive female energies, and associated it with the fertile menstrual blood of the mother goddess, Isis. In its red, red-orange to reddish brown shades, they considered it the active male energy stone, recognized by its glowing vibrant color.  Carnelian is traditionally worn to enhance passion, love, and desire.

Ruby on the other hand, the more well-known of these two striking July birthstones is a deep red or bold magenta toned gemstone that for centuries has been a prized jewel all over the world, particularly in Asia. According to Hindu legend, the glowing fire within rubies burned so hot that they allegedly boiled water and shone so bright that even the thickest clothing and could not hide its gleaming glory. Similar to carnelian, the ruby is a stone of passion and desire and are considered in certain cultures to be the perfect gemstone for weddings as it promotes faithful passionate commitment and closeness between a couple.

So whether you need a burst of courage heading into a job interview or the heat of romantic passion in your life, these blazing July gemstones could be just what you’re looking for. Here are some our favourite Juvi pieces featuring these brilliant birthstones:

June’s Birthstones – Moonstone and Pearl

The longer days and bright colours of summer in June really are breath-taking and give you a definite pep in your step when you leave the house in the morning, but what I always love in June are those lovely mild, romantic summer nights. As though in ode to these stunning clear June evenings, the two birthstones for this dreamy moonlit month are the opalescent pearl and moonstone.

Both pearls and moonstones have a gorgeous feminine softness to them and have an association with love, purity and the moon. According to Hindu mythology for instance, pearls were said to be teardrops of the moon that fell into the sea, and were picked by Krishna for his daughter on her wedding day. Meanwhile, moonstone is said to carry the the energy of the new moon at the height of its power, stimulating psychic perception, vision and dream work. Within Chinese culture, moonstone is also believed to be the perfect expression of the feminine yin energy, granting the wearer of moonstone calm, peace and balance in their lives.

Being so romantic and magical in their own ways, moonstone and pearls definitely bring out the hopeless romantic and midnight dreamer in us and we love it!
